Esse founder Trevor Steyn was recently interviewed by Dr Ekta Yadav, MD MBA MS (Skincare Anarchy). We encourage you to listen to the full version of this enlightening episode or catch the highlights below.
The Journey to Esse Skincare
Trevor talks about his background in chemistry and drug discovery, and how he found inspiration in the Human Microbiome Project. This groundbreaking research project revealed that our bodies (skin included) are ecosystems; our own cells working in close partnership with microbes. This led Esse Skincare to where it is today, pioneering microbiome science and using live probiotics to optimise skin health.
Keystone Species in Skincare
Lactobacillus, transferred from mother to child during birth to become the first members of the skin microbiome, play a crucial role in skin health. Trevor highlighted the importance of Lactobacillus in creating the perfect conditions on skin to support a healthy skin ecosystem. They are known as “keystone species” – present at low levels, but crucial in setting the scene for the growth of other beneficial microbial partners.
Inflammageing and the Microbiome
Research shows that optimising the gut microbiome benefits gut health, and similar principles apply to skin health. Improving tight junctions in the skin, influenced by species like Lactobacillus rhamnosus, strengthens the skin’s primary barrier function for better protection against external stressors. Beneficial microbes also calm our immune systems, reducing inflammation and slowing signs of ageing.
The Shift Towards Biotechnology
The “better living through chemistry” mindset involves the use of single chemicals to greatly influence natural systems. This approach is giving way to biotechnology and probiotics. Trevor sees single chemicals as blunt tools for optimising skin ecosystems and believes that mimicking evolutionary conditions through biotechnology offers better health outcomes.
Balancing Short-Term and Long-Term Skin Health
Esse works to optimise skin health for long-term outcomes, rather than sacrificing skin health for immediate results. Trevor acknowledges the demand for instant outcomes but emphasises sustainable practices that ensure skin health over time.
Skincare and Aesthetic Procedures
Esse also recognises that aesthetic treatments are becoming increasingly popular, so creates products to accelerate skin recovery and improve results. This innovation uses live probiotic microbes and other biotech ingredients to restore the skin microbiome, reduce risk of infection, and enhance wound healing. Trevor believes in using beneficial microbes to protect skin and improve collagen production, safely guiding skin through the healing process without relying only on antibiotics.
By focusing on long-term results and sustainable practices, Esse Skincare aims to revolutionise the skincare industry.
